Phase 1: Discover

We start by getting to know your goals and branding strategy.

Learning about your organization and achieving your goals begins with an exceptional understanding of your branding strategy. Knowing how you want to use your mascot helps determine several aspects of the design and ensures we provide a finished product that both visually and functionally meets your requirements.

If your organization has an existing logo or character concept we will design a life-like mascot to bring your idea to life. Our team will also work closely with you through the discovery phase to design a mascot from scratch if no pre-existing concept has been developed.

Below is a sketch provided to us from Wheaton College. They came to us in 2011 with an idea for a mastodon mascot to represent their nickname, The Thunder.

Colossal yet cuddly. Awesome yet accessible.

These were the challenges presented by “Tor”, the largest, and first two-person mascot produced in the history of The Olympus Group Mascot Department.

Collaboration between the Wheaton College Athletic Department and over a dozen sketch artists, sculptors, foam and fabric engineers and costume designers was critical to the success of “Tor”. His size, shape, color, texture, movement requirements and personal traits were based on direct input and selections made by the college. Olympus Group then went to work on the design, material selections and construction of this massive mastodon. A few weeks later, “Tor” arrived.

Thoughtful decision-making, innovation and expertise are the hallmarks of The Olympus Group Mascot Department. Careful attention to features including weight, balance, vision, movement and interior environmental conditions are essential to the functionality of all mascots. “Tor” provides a safe, comfortable environment for the performers, enabling them to delight audiences with “Tor’s” furry, fun and formidable presence.

Phase 2: Design

Mascots have to be much more than just lovable. That’s where smart design comes in.

Functionality and appearance are the key aspects in the design of a mascot. Our designers work hard to provide both. Technically correct sketches are provided, allowing you to see exactly where a performer’s vision will be. Seeing a technically correct sketch also allows you to get a feel for the overall scale of the mascot. Fabric samples are provided for review and approval as well. Manufacturing of your mascot will not begin until the sketch and fabrics have all been approved.

Our mascot design team will provide a FREE concept sketch for your approval. Once a general understanding of what you’re looking for is established, our professional artists begin working on a sketch of the mascot. The sketch will illustrate how the costume will lay out with a performer inside.

Here is a final sketch of Tor, the Mastodon of Wheaton College, designed by our Mascot Team.

Phase 3: Manufacture

Our quality and execution are why we’ve been selected to bring national icons to life.

Your finished product will look like the sketch you approved. We can produce one unique mascot or hundreds – no matter the quantity, they will always be consistent with the approved sketch.

From the start of the process you will quickly learn the many reasons why we are selected to bring national icons to life. Our consultative approach, technical design accuracy, in-house manufacturing capabilities and awareness to uphold brand integrity all provide you with a team you can trust to create your mascot.

There are two characteristics that separate Tor from any other mascot we have created at Olympus Group. First, he is the largest mascot costume we have ever produced, and second, it takes two adults to operate him.

Phase 4: Support

Even after your mascot leaves our warehouse, you’ll continue to get great service from Olympus.

After your mascot ships, our team remains a partner for a successful mascot program. Our staff looks forward to sharing our resources and knowledge about safety, performer training, and ways to maximize your return on investment.

Refurbishing services are also available to help keep your investment looking its best and usable for many, many years to come.
